Most good (successful) products have two things in common: simple to understand and easy to use.
iPod is a very good example. When it was introduced, most of the MP3 players were 128M-512M. This means that one had to remove some music to put new ones. What was the capacity of iPod - 20G!!
Now look at iMac/MacBook, what are the differences between other laptops? Maybe cool... But being cool is not THE reason to use a product - for a ordinary Joe,price/performance is the main reason to chose a product.
