Shame on your CHINA!!

No regard for your own people. How can we expect you to think of giving respect to Tibetians?

Oh China, you need to just find yourself some religion. I’d talk to the Dalai Lama.

The relay should carry on, but it should now be organised to raise funds to help those victims of the disaster. It should be used to raise public concerns with the consequences on the lives of those who have badly hurt.

I won’t say it’s right, but there is something of “the show must go on” about the torch run. Back when President Kennedy was assassinated, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle made the decision that football would be played that Sunday, while the nation was still in shock at the events in Dallas a few days earlier. After the Sept. 11 attacks, the baseball season resumed, with Mayor Giuliani in attendance. Whatever you think of the torch run — and I know all of what’s been written by passionate critics of China’s human rights record, and the attempt to tie this run back to its Nazi origins, can’t we just leave well enough alone? Let the Chinese government use the torch run as a rallying point for donation, and let people shower the runners with money that can be picked up and used for the benefit of the victims, if you’re looking for meaning in the midst of tragedy.

I discern a tone of glee at internal comments from China. Are you gloating?

If you do read and follow the Chinese websites, you will realise that the tone they use in general is not really that of ‘protest’, but of stating/questioning that it’s perhaps time to focus on providing aid.

Don’t mislead the readers!

People mourned for minutes before the relay. Local people tried to use the relay as an occasion to call for help and patriotism. As far as I know, Bush continued his vacation for another 2 days after Katrina. Chinese premier arrived the quake site in 2 hours.

Besides, is it time to criticize China at this moment? Is it humane to criticize while the most needed is help and sympathy? NY Times should do better than this.

The human loss is deeply felt here.

What is revealing is the official, Li Zhanjun, a Beijing Olympic spokesman, who stated,“We have not received any instruction to stop the relay.” I would suggest that they should not need to be told by a higher power to stop the relay temporarily. They should instead listen to their conscience.

I was attracted by the title, but disappointed by the content… I thought the author is so powerful as to find out things happening here in China and not even I know.

It’s not protest, just some sparks of ideas. If you can read Chinese and go through those posts, only a really small proportion are calling a cessation, while most other don’t go further than suggesting saving the extravagance.

I for one would love to see major political changes in China. But NOT on the backs of these disasters. These are times that humans should pool together their hearts and souls. Political agendas such as is evident in this piece should be set aside for now, for decency sake.

Yes, Chinese are now hosting the Olympic Games. And, they happen to face natural disasters this year. Is this ‘news’ trying to indicate that China should cancel the torch relay, and hopefully the Olympic Games this year because of these disasters? No way. Say whatever you want, please. And at the same time, please bear in mind, this is ‘a year of touble’ for China, partly because of your skewed reports.
