Clarification on new findings on feeding them with GMO corn

Need for further studies

(Vienna, 11.11.2008, AGES) Genetically modified corn as feed may be under special experimental conditions affect the reproduction rate of laboratory mice have. That revealed a study by Univ. Juergen Zentek (Veterinary Medical University of Vienna), on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Health, Family and Youth (BMGFJ) was carried out today at a symposium of the AGES, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH, was presented. It was an individual audit, whose results no case directly transferred to humans can be. But it shows the need for further studies.

Fewer offspring in the fourth generation

The aim of the study was the possible effects of GMO corn NK603 X MON810 in the long-term feeding trials over several generations of mice to investigate. There were three experimental designs applied: a multi-generation study, the method ongoing breeding and a lifetime attempt. The mice were fed with a test diet from 33 percent share of the corn GMO maize MON810 X NK603. In the multi-generation study was a control group of non-GMO corn fed from Austria.

The results showed no differences in feed intake and weight development of adult animals. However, in one of these experimental designs, the number of discards and the descendants of ongoing breeding in GMO food group more than in the control group: In the GMO food group remained without throwing more females than in the control group. The trial showed no lifespan differences.

The study shows that multi-generation tests are perfectly adequate, Füttereinflüsse in mice show. Whether similar findings for other animals are expected, in appropriate approaches will be investigated. A hedge of these preliminary results by further studies urgently needed, study author Univ. Juergen Zentek.
