OIL & GAS: Libya near decision on Canadian oil firm sale

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Libyan government is close to making a decision on whether to allow the sale of Verenex Energy, a Canadian oil explorer with operations in Libya, to China National Petroleum Corp. A $430m deal announced in February has been delayed by Tripoli holding up approval. Verenex's share price has fallen as a result and the Canadian government has registered its concern with Libyan authorities over the issue. Libya has indicated that it will either approve the deal, block the transaction on national interest grounds or exercise an option to buy Verenex itself. The WSJ says the issue highlights the continuing pitfalls for Western oi l firms of doing business in Libya, despite the reopening of the country's oil sector to foreign companies in 2005 and the signing of contracts with international oil majors like Total.
