your examples cover only the recent 1980s PC revolution.

The second industrial revolution based on steel, electricity and chemistry industries are most driven by serious academic research from the so-called 正业 researchers. Those are smart and hard-working people, elites from elite schools (esp., in Germany, in terms of their contribution to chemical element table as well as other research achievements).

The internet was also created by 正业 researchers who have at first military purpose in mind when they established the first WWW network.

America's problem: more and more kids show no interest in science/math. The 1980s innovation wave was pushed partially by those generation of Americans who dreamed to be scientists to compete against USSR. They answered to the call from JFK in 1960s.

Today, if one kid says he or she is interested in science or math, he or she will easily lose out in their teenage community and be perceived as an unsociable nerd.

--利润驱使, that's why so many smart Americans give up dreams in science and participated in the Wall Street Casino.

Their talents created no scientific breakthrough, but our current big credit disaster.

利润驱使 is a double-sided sword. I am doing capital market research: you can not believe how many tech CEOs have been playing with numbers in the last 10 years. Many SEC sanctions are against those tech startups who are solely driven by 利润--their personal stock option profit, not by more innovation, but by more accounting tricks.
