Sometimes it might be necesary to reinstall Windows 98 or Windows 2000. In that case Windows XP will no longer boot when you try to boot to Windows XP Home. In that case you must do the following steps to repair the installation of Windows XP Home.

●Reinstall Windows 98 or Windows 2000 on their respective partitions and complete the installation.

●Boot up Windows 98 or Windows 2000 and then insert the Windows XP Home CD in the CD-ROM Drive and the Welcome Screen will appear.

●Click on Install Windows XP Home and a screen will appear advising you to upgrade the existing Operating System. Do not accept this. In the drop down list box you will see another option "Fresh Installation". Select that and click Next.

●A window will appear where you have to select the regional settings. Click on the advanced button and make sure that the check box "I want to select the partition during Setup" is checked. If this is not checked you will not be able to choose the new partition. Select Next and Setup will copy the necessary files and restart in Dos mode.

●When the computer restarts you will see the options. Install Windows XP, Repair Windows XP Home. Click on Repair Windows XP Home. Setup will now switch to the Recovery Console. This will be a blank screen with a command dos prompt.

●Switch to the drive d:\ where d represents the drive of your CD-ROM. If your drive isnt D:\ then replace this with the appropriate drive as per your system.

●You will have to switch to the directory where XP Home (English) resides on the CD-ROM and then type this command bootcfg /rebuild . If Setup says that the file cannot be found, then switch to the appropriate directory where this file is found.

●You will be prompted for the administrator's userid and password to begin this process.

●Now Setup will display a list of all the drives available on your system and prompt you to select the partition to repair. You must type the number on which XP Home resides and then Setup will repair the installation. Then reboot the system and now you will be able to boot into Windows XP Home.

●Setup will create a blank entry in the boot.ini file. You can open this file from Windows 98 or Windows 2000 or Windows XP Home and delete this blank line.
