both are Gilded Age mansions, and neither is very far from New York city. You can also stop by Flushing for food en route.

As for museums in the city, the City Museum is fun to stop by if you are interested in the history of the city. I also like the Park Avenue Armory even though it's not really a museum. It hosts various art shows. Even if you aren't interested in arts, the architecture of the building itself is worth checking out.
