泰坦尼克号的船尾高高地翘了起来，指向天空，随后一点一点地下沉，缓缓地没入了水中。一直坚持在舷旁演奏着一些欢快的华尔兹乐曲以安抚大家情绪的随船乐队开始演奏最后一曲。没有人知道他们是怎样在这样的情况下还能坚持演奏，留在幸存者记忆中的，只是这首若隐若现从海面飘来的Nearer My God to Thee。

他们并非船员的一部分，然而他们选择自愿留下了，选择用自己的音乐在这最后时刻陪伴那些即将面对不可避免的死亡的人们，让人们能够多一些平静和勇气。

乐队共有八个人，他们的名字是：乐队长W.H.哈特利，第一小提琴J.L.休姆，小提琴手G.克林斯，大提琴手J.W.伍德沃德，大提琴手P.C.泰勒，大提琴手R.布里考克斯，低音提琴手J.F.P.克拉克，钢琴师T.布拉利。

乐队长哈特利的遗体后被找到，并被送回了他的故乡英国兰开夏郡科恩镇。三万民众参加了他的葬礼。他被安葬在当地的贝瑟独立卫理公会教堂，他少年时参加唱诗班的地方。
