家园 西河微步-学生的名字 每年都要教课，每次我都喜欢记一大堆名字。用起心来，就经常记得碰见重名的。某年一个50人的班上竟然有4个Michael,这次三个班上加起来一共有6个Sara(h).据说美加最热门的名字都是有时效性的。查了查2010的最热门女孩名字，Sarah落后到30名外了。
今年还有个奇怪的名字，Sebastian。电视剧The Shark男主角的名字，以前从来没有碰到，这次一下碰到三个。
最绝的是碰到各国语言拼写的名字。班上欧洲后裔特多。点名册上过去，不同拼写的相同名字争奇斗艳：
Federico/Frederique/Frederick,
Stefano/Stephan/Steven/Stefan,
Jaclyn/Jacqueline/Jacquelyn/Jackie...
还好，老师不用考学生名字的拼写。不然我肯定不及格。
这几年教了这么多学生，从来没有碰到我女儿的名字。我有次给领导说，如果碰到了，一定优待。
最难忘的两个名字，一个是亚洲学生的名字，Yatin,我挺不好意思在课堂上喊他回答问题的。还有他不太积极发言。最近班上的一个，Simon King。我一瞅名单，这不是西门大官人吗？

家园 那居然不是女生么？ 如果纯按照发音，我估计是叫 雅婷 的。要是台湾来的，那就更准了。见过好几个台湾女孩的名字，实在是很古色古香，相当文雅。
家园 想当年当TA的时候 一个印度教授，班上起码一半印度学生，教授居然让我念名字，学生自己上来领考卷，他好看看谁考的如何，汗呀，多半名字我都不知道该怎么发音，只好交还给教授让他自己念名字。
家园 德国好多男孩叫sebastian 斯巴斯提安，缩短了seba，第一个音节长，第二个音节很很短，一带而过，听起来象sieb（德语里的筛子）。我认识俩，都是和筛子联系在一起才记住的。

From the Latin name Sebastianus which meant "from Sebaste". Sebaste was the name a town in Asia Minor, its name deriving from Greek σεβαστο (sebastos) "venerable" (a translation of Latin Augustus, the title of the Roman emperors). Saint Sebastian was a 3rd-century Roman soldier martyred by arrows after it was discovered he was a Christian. Due to the saint's popularity, the name came into general use in medieval Europe, especially in Spain and France. It was also borne by a 16th-century king of Portugal who died in a crusade against Morocco.

Thomas 叫Tommy
John 叫Johnny
Michael 叫Micky
William 叫Billy or Willy
Danial 叫Danny
Gabriel 叫Gabie
这种变形大致相当于我们中国人的军军，敏敏，木木等。
时间一久，有些竟然最后变成正式名字了。当然，我们也有薄瓜瓜，毛东东，万宝宝，郭晶晶作为大名的嘛。
一些名字缩化后看不出原名，比如，Elizabeth 缩成Beth或Betty.
还有一些名字缩化后看不出男女了，比如Alex, Jackie(y）。
有个广东来的邻居，家里有个小男孩，叫Alex。广式发音有点顾前不顾后，于是我们跟着他爹妈一起喊：阿赖。

In other Anglo-brother languages (aka. Germanic) languages, we will see similar patterns. E.g., in Dutch, it is "-j".
And "-j" and "-y" has the same pronounication in Germanic languages--anyway, their ancesters all came from the same tribe.
BTW, "willy" is used more often in UK, while "Bill" or "Billy" are used more often in States. Different English-speaking nations even diverged in informal naming.
家园 Thomas也缩成Tom，William法语对应名字叫 Guillaume，是个法国特别常见的名字。
