An American in England

An American visiting in England asked at the hotel for the elevator.

The doorman looked a bit confused but smiled when he realized what the man wanted.

"You must mean the lift," he said.

"No," the American responded. "If I ask for the elevator I mean the elevator."

"Well," the doorman answered, "over here we call them lifts".

"Now you listen", the American said rather irritated, "someone in America invented the elevator."

"Oh, right you are sir," the doorman said in a polite tone, "but someone here in England invented the language."

一个在英国的老美

某访问英国的老美在旅馆里问升降机在哪里。

看门人开头看上去有点搞糊涂了，但一旦弄明白了那人要找什么就微笑了起来。

“您指的一定是电梯吧。”他说到。

“不，”老美回答道，“如果我问升降机在哪里，我指的就是升降机。”

“嗯，”看门人回答道，“咱们这儿把这类东西叫作电梯。”

“听清楚了，”老美怒气冲冲地说道，“升降机是美国人发明的。”

“哦，先生您说的太对了，”看门人用彬彬有礼的语气说道，“可是英语是咱们英国人发明的。”
