Vietnam Will `Get Over' Economic Problems, U.S. Ambassador Says

June 20 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael Michalak, discusses Vietnam's current economic issues, including the fastest inflation in more than 16 years. Michalak spoke at a press conference yesterday in Hanoi ahead of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's visit to the U.S. next week.

Dung will visit the U.S. from June 23 to 26, the Vietnamese government said on its Web site earlier this week. President George W. Bush will receive Dung at the White House on June 24, according to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi.

The U.S. largely views Vietnam's current economic issues as ``short-term,'' and ``eventually Vietnam will get over them,'' Michalak said.

U.S. investors ``are not here for the short-term, they are here for the long-term.

``Up to now, the economic management in Vietnam has been very good, so they are willing to wait a while to see how the current economic management handles the inflation situation.

``This is an excellent opportunity for the Prime Minister to tell American investors exactly how he has handled it and how he intends to handle it going forward.''
