Fonterra admits it knew last month of contaminated milk powder which has led to the death of a baby in China and Prime Minister Helen Clark said today that New Zealand officials intervened.
The milk powder - made by Chinese-based Sanlu Group, in which Fonterra has a 43 per cent share - has been blamed for causing kidney stones and making more than 430 babies sick.
Prime Minister Helen Clark said today that Fonterra has pushed for a full recall at the earliest possible opportunity but had been blocked by Chinese local government officials.
"They have been trying for weeks to get official recall and the local authorities in China would not do it," she said on TVNZ's Breakfast programme.
